![]() Turns out you can.įirst, let me emphasize that NextCloud is in very active development. This got me wondering if I could use Backblaze B2 as external file storage to host files on the cloud with NextCloud and Backblaze. This took me over the threshold and we now use Backblaze B2 to backup our VPS as well as our personal computers. Backblaze advertises that they will put your data on a thumb-drive or external hard disk and mail it to you for a very reasonable fee. More importantly, the transfer costs for B2 are 10 times less than for AWS and if you are actively using the data on AWS S3, transfer costs will dwarf the storage costs so this is a big deal.įor a large amount of data, the transfer cost is just part of the problem it can take a long time to download Terabytes of data if one needs to do a full recovery. The cost for B2 storage is less than normal AWS S3 and a little more than AWS Glacial Storage, but with the accessibility of S3 instead of that of the limited Glacial Storage. Backblaze tends to push their per-computer service which is not what I am interested in, but I found that B2 indeed has promise. Not long ago, a friend suggested I checkout Backblaze B2 cloud storage. But a CDN is not the right tool for general file access and S3 is outside of the budget. For serving web content, S3 with CloudFront–which we use with WordPress–has been pretty cost effective too. ![]() ![]() Glacial storage was infamous for this in the past, but current costs are reasonable if not used too often. One problem with AWS storage is the cost of transferring data out–transferring data is is free, but getting it out can be costly. That has proven very cost effective, even on the few occasions when we needed to retrieve something from deep storage. Further, we use AWS Glacial Storage for long-term archiving. AWS S3 integrates nicely with AWS CloudFront to be your content delivery network (CDN). We have been using Amazon Web Services (AWS) S3 for our media storage for our WordPress sites. Discovering Backblaze B2Ī universal truth is that one can never have enough disk storage. While setting up the demo on a small AWS EC2 machine, I considered how to handle data growth and realized that NextCloud has quite a few options for data storage, but it also has a huge number of Apps that give NextCloud all sorts of interesting capabilities. You can sign-up for NextCloud as a service–or for the control-freaks like me–you can install the program on your own server or VPS and host everything yourself. NextCloud is targeted as an alternative for companies that want to have high fidelity control over all of their data. This time I discovered NextCloud which is a spin-off of OwnCloud. The main capability at the time seemed to be uploading files to, storing files on, and downloading files from your own server and we didn’t have much extra storage on our VPS–none that we wanted to use for files not needed for our email or web sites.įlash forward a few years and I was called upon to do another technology demonstration for another startup. I was demonstrating specific objectives and after the demonstration, I deactivated it. Several years ago as part of a technology demonstration for potential investors in a startup, I used a program called OwnCloud that enables you to host your own cloud services on your VPS. Discovering the Cloud with NextCloudĪs described before, we have a virtual private server (VPS) that we use for various services like email with push notification and hosting web sites. Right now, for the first time, things have come together: there is a fantastic option that lets you host files on the cloud with NextCloud and Backblaze B2. Over that time, I have found numerous applications that do one or two things well, but what has been completely lacking is an integrated cloud environment that leverages the mutual benefits possible while also retaining data privacy. For years, I have looked for ways to achieve the convenience of having those cloud-based services without the loss of privacy. ![]() Who doesn’t like convenient access to their photos, files, and music? Many companies that provide services where you can store and access your files also impact your privacy.
